MILWAUKEE — Shohei Ohtani took advantage of a rare batting practice session Saturday at American Family Field as the Los Angeles Dodgers prepared for Game 1 of the National League Championship Series against the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday. The four-time Most Valuable Player focused on refining his swing mechanics, aiming to overcome a recent slump that saw him go two for 13 during the division series.
Hitting coach Aaron Bates described Ohtani’s approach during the workout, noting the player’s emphasis on maintaining proper barrel control and avoiding premature hand rollovers. “Just trying not to flip the barrel so soon,” Bates explained, adding that Ohtani was working to establish a comfortable setup and commit to his finish. The goal, Bates said, was to help Ohtani stay on the ball longer while keeping effort levels manageable.
Ohtani and outfielder Mookie Betts had been discussing hitting strategies in recent days, and the decision to take batting practice on the field was part of an effort to adjust to the unique environment. Bates noted the challenges presented by the “new field, new backdrop,” including the massive videoboard displaying a “2026 NLCS” logo, and how hitting in the stadium helped Ohtani acclimate ahead of the postseason matchup.
Throughout the season, Ohtani has rarely hit on the field during batting practice, making this session particularly notable as the Dodgers seek to get their key player into better form. The team’s efforts to fine-tune his mechanics come as Ohtani looks to contribute more consistently at the plate after a slow start in the playoffs.
