The Department of Environment (DOE) in Malaysia has introduced an online payment platform for environmental compounds, aiming to streamline the process for individuals and businesses. The new system, known as i-Payment, was launched in collaboration with the Accountant General’s Department of Malaysia (JANM) as part of broader efforts to digitalize public services.

Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Datuk Seri Arthur Joseph Kurup highlighted the importance of integrating digital tools with robust enforcement measures to uphold environmental compliance. He emphasized that digitalization should enhance accessibility, efficiency, and responsiveness in government services rather than merely transferring existing procedures to online formats.

The i-Payment system is designed to facilitate easier and more systematic settlement of compound payments, reinforcing enforcement initiatives without undermining regulatory rigor. To encourage adoption, the government is offering a RM100 discount on each compound paid via i-Payment from September 22 until November 30, ahead of the system’s full operational launch on December 1. The initiative is timed to coincide with National Environment Day 2026.

Minister Arthur urged those with outstanding environmental compounds to take advantage of the new platform to settle their payments more conveniently and efficiently.

In addition to expanding digital payment options, the ministry is intensifying efforts to promote environmental education with the goal of fostering sustainable values and practices from a young age. The DOE continues to support the Sustainable Schools Environmental Award programme, which encourages community involvement, resource management, and environmentally responsible habits within educational institutions.

Arthur noted that education forms a vital complement to enforcement and pollution prevention, aiming to instill long-term behavioral changes vital for environmental sustainability.
