Trainers use a variety of methods, often including electronic collars, to deliver a mild, controlled shock intended to discourage dogs from approaching these potentially deadly reptiles.
One such dog, Ripley, a two-year-old blue heeler mix from Tucson, Arizona, experienced a simulated snakebite as part of her training. The carefully administered shock was enough to dissuade her from further investigation of the western diamondback rattlesnake featured during the session. Trainer JJ Belcher, who conducts these programs through Sublime Canine, said a single training session paired with an electronic collar can be sufficient to teach dogs to keep a safe distance. He also offers a free refresher session after a year to reinforce the lesson.
Owners Amber Schneider and Wendy Timm chose the training due to Ripley’s natural curiosity and strong prey drive, which often leads her to hunt small animals on their desert property. They emphasized the importance of protecting their pet in an environment where venomous snakes are prevalent.
The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) estimates that up to 150,000 dogs are bitten by venomous snakes annually in the US. In regions like Arizona, the Veterinary Specialty Center of Tucson sees daily cases of dogs injured by rattlesnake bites, according to emergency veterinarian Dr. Sarah Carotenuto. She noted the survival rate for treated pets is approximately 94 percent, but cautioned that antivenom treatment and hospitalization can be expensive.
Training programs are offered across the western United States and other areas where different species of rattlesnakes, such as eastern diamondbacks and timber rattlers, are found. Trainers argue that electronic collars provide fast and effective results, although there is some controversy over their use. While the American Humane Society opposes electronic collars citing concerns over cruelty, the ASPCA does not explicitly oppose them but urges proper use under the guidance of experienced trainers.
Pamela Reid, vice president of behavioral sciences at the ASPCA, emphasized the importance of weighing the risks and benefits. She recommended combining avoidance training with reliable commands like “come” and “leave it” to enhance safety.
Some trainers, like Belcher, offer positive-reinforcement alternatives but noted they require multiple sessions and can be substantially more costly. Another trainer in Utah, Mike Parmley, uses low-level electronic collar stimulation and runs group classes to help dogs avoid Great Basin rattlesnakes, which have become more active due to recent warmer weather.
Experts advise that prevention also involves environmental management, such as clearing yards of tall grass to reduce rodent populations that attract snakes, staying on well-marked trails during hikes, and keeping dogs on a leash. Immediate veterinary care is critical if a snakebite occurs, as venom can cause rapid, severe tissue damage.
Overall, these programs aim to reduce the number of snakebite incidents in dogs, combining training, environmental awareness, and emergency preparedness to keep pets safe in snake-prone areas.
