Doha Design District, under the stewardship of Msheireb Properties, convened a Design Talks session titled “Between Space and Place” to examine the development of placemaking in Qatar and its influence on fostering connections between people and their environments. The event gathered experts from the Ministry of Municipality, Qatar Museums, Qatar University, and Earthna by Qatar Foundation to share insights on the subject.
Participants discussed how placemaking integrates physical design elements with cultural heritage, communal memory, and social interactions. Abdulrahman Al Mana from the Ministry of Municipality highlighted the sensitivity of traditional urban design to its natural surroundings, pointing to Souq Waqif as an example of a space that successfully preserves its historical character while serving contemporary needs.
Sheikha Reem Al Thani of Qatar Museums emphasized the importance of organic community growth in shaping distinctive places, suggesting that local development processes are key to maintaining authentic environments. Meanwhile, Dr. Hameda Yousef Janahi from Qatar University focused on the role of traditional Fereej neighborhoods and Arab-Islamic urbanism in Doha’s urban fabric, underlining their contribution to the city’s unique identity.
Dr. Samie Kayani of Earthna described placemaking as a dynamic, ongoing process that responds to shifting cultural and environmental contexts. The session highlighted the value of such interdisciplinary dialogue in furthering Doha’s design and cultural ecosystem, reinforcing the district’s commitment to continuing knowledge exchange and innovation in urban development.
