George Russell secured pole position for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on Saturday following a critical error by championship leader Kimi Antonelli during qualifying at the Baku street circuit. Antonelli, who leads the championship by 81 points over his Mercedes teammate Russell after 14 of 23 races, crashed at the first corner, hitting the wall and puncturing his front left tire. The Italian driver, 20, will start 16th after describing the mistake as “stupid” and acknowledging the need to remain fully focused.
Russell produced a commanding lap, finishing eight-tenths of a second ahead of Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and McLaren’s Oscar Piastri. The British driver called it the biggest margin of pole position of his career and said it felt like a perfect lap. This marks Russell’s first pole since the Austrian Grand Prix in June, a race he went on to win. He credited the summer break for helping him feel more comfortable and drive more intuitively in his Mercedes.
Baku’s famously windy conditions posed additional challenges, but Russell’s mastery of the circuit was evident. Antonelli was further hampered by a hydraulic problem that limited his practice running on Thursday, placing him at a disadvantage ahead of qualifying.
Despite the setback, Antonelli remains a formidable contender. He recently won the Italian Grand Prix starting from 19th on the grid, benefitting from a new engine upgrade. Russell faces the task of reducing Antonelli’s sizeable championship lead in the remaining races if he hopes to challenge for the title.
Red Bull's Isack Hadjar will start fourth on the grid, followed by McLaren’s Lando Norris in fifth and Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton in sixth. Max Verstappen endured a difficult qualifying session, hindered by a late yellow flag, and will line up eighth.
The race date was advanced by 24 hours to avoid clashing with Azerbaijan’s Remembrance Day commemorations on Sunday. As the championship enters its decisive stages, Friday’s qualifying results have set the stage for a competitive contest in Baku.
