PUTRAJAYA — Malaysian authorities have found no evidence of a breeding population of piranhas in Klau Dam, Raub, following the reported capture of a suspected piranha on August 26. The Fisheries Department (DOF) said investigations and monitoring efforts have so far located only a single fish of this type.

Datuk Adnan Hussain, director-general of the Fisheries Department, stated that since the initial report, field surveillance conducted by the Pahang Fisheries Department through September 15 has not recorded any further catches or related safety issues in the area.

A technical assessment by the Fisheries Research Institute in Glami Lemi, Negri Sembilan, examined photographs and video footage of the fish. The experts concluded that the visible physical characteristics are consistent with those of the genus Pygocentrus, which includes various species of piranhas. However, a definitive identification to the species level was not possible due to the absence of the physical specimen. The fish reportedly died and was disposed of by the individual who caught it before authorities could retrieve it for closer analysis.

While the discovery has raised public concern, officials have emphasized that there is currently no indication of an established or reproducing piranha population in Klau Dam. The Fisheries Department continues to monitor the situation to ensure the safety of the local ecosystem and communities.
