Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, acting secretary general of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), cautioned party members against compromising the party’s longstanding political objectives for personal benefits such as obtaining fertiliser dealerships or government contracts. Rizvi emphasized the importance of maintaining public trust by demonstrating tolerance and responsible behaviour.

He made these remarks on Monday during a commemorative event at the Jatiya Press Club in Dhaka, marking the 10th anniversary of the death of former minister and BNP National Standing Committee member Brigadier General (retd) ASM Hannan Shah.

Rizvi urged BNP leaders and activists to resist focusing on individual gains or losses, advising instead that they prioritize the wider responsibilities toward the party and the government. He highlighted that after enduring 17 years of political challenges, the BNP has formed a government following what he described as a free and fair election under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

The acting secretary general praised the current administration’s efforts to improve the country’s economy and alleviate citizens’ difficulties despite facing multiple challenges. He noted that industries such as mills and factories had been at risk of shutting down due to shortages of gas and electricity but said the situation is gradually improving under Rahman’s leadership.

“By the grace of Allah, these services are being restored in many places. Gas stoves in our kitchens are burning again. I believe the situation will gradually return to normal in the coming days,” Rizvi said.

His comments reflect a call for unity within the BNP as the party navigates its role in governance while addressing ongoing economic and infrastructural challenges facing the country.
