Released more than a year after the original game, the expansion pack Revelations provides a direct continuation of the narrative introduced in id Software’s The Dark Ages, a notable entry in the Doom franchise. While players unfamiliar with the base game technically can start with Revelations, doing so may result in missing crucial story elements that build on the initial campaign.
The new storyline follows the Slayer, who begins the expansion gravely wounded and abandoned in Purgatory. He is subsequently discovered and healed by the Architect, setting him on a path of vengeance against the High Council for his prior imprisonment. Though narrative depth has improved, Doom’s fan base primarily seeks intense combat experiences, and Revelations delivers ample action.
Distinct from the original campaign’s series of consecutive levels, Revelations introduces a central hub area. This space enables players to explore with infrequent enemy encounters initially, providing opportunities to uncover secrets, solve puzzles, and unlock new abilities. Collectibles present a greater challenge in this expansion, as previous map signposts assisting with navigation have been replaced by simpler indicators marking collected items, placing more emphasis on player exploration and discovery.
One of the most significant gameplay changes in Revelations is the introduction of the Chain Spear, a sub-weapon that replaces the Shield Saw due to damage sustained by the latter. The Shield Saw, known for its versatility in close combat, is swapped for the Chain Spear, which fundamentally alters combat dynamics by adding enhanced mobility. The new weapon allows players to hook and pull themselves toward enemies, similar to the grappling mechanics found in Doom Eternal’s Super Shotgun.
The Chain Spear serves multiple functions: as a melee weapon, ranged projectile, crowd-control tool, aerial mobility device, and even a defensive parry mechanism. While mastering its diverse uses may require time and practice, it considerably increases the fluidity and speed of combat, contrasting with the heavier, tank-like movement of the Slayer in the original campaign. This shift enables players to maneuver swiftly around foes, enhancing the frenetic and visceral feel reminiscent of Doom Eternal’s combat style.
Upon the Architect’s repair and return of the Slayer’s shield later in the expansion, gameplay intensity escalates further. The game retains its medieval-inspired aesthetic, maintaining the series’ characteristic dark and foreboding atmosphere, although some players had hoped for additional gothic hellscape environments.
Despite being an add-on, Revelations is regarded as a substantial enhancement rather than a typical downloadable content pack. It builds significantly on the foundation established by The Dark Ages, introducing innovative mechanics and gameplay refinements that elevate the overall experience. The Chain Spear, in particular, has been widely praised as a transformative element, positioning Revelations as a defining evolution of the Dark Ages installment in the Doom series.
