Dorking Wanderers and Dover Athletic played to a 1-1 draw on Saturday ahead of their scheduled FA Cup meeting next week. The match took place at Dorking’s home ground and saw both sides share points after an evenly contested encounter.

Dorking Wanderers took the lead shortly before the hour mark. Dan Pybus delivered a well-placed corner that ultimately led to Alfie Rutherford capitalizing on a loose ball in the box to score. The home side had started the game strongly, with George Nikaj causing early problems with his efforts, though he was unable to convert any chances. Brennan Camp also appeared to score early on for Dorking, but his goal was ruled out for offside.

Dover Athletic responded in the closing stages of the match. In stoppage time, the visitors were awarded a penalty after Georg Francomb was judged to have fouled substitute Sak Hassan in the box. Bates took the spot-kick; his initial attempt was saved by the Dorking goalkeeper Glenn Morris, but Bates followed up to score on the rebound, securing a late equaliser for Dover.

Marc White, manager of Dorking Wanderers, expressed disappointment at dropping points, describing the result as “two points lost” and feeling his team had been the more dominant side throughout the match. Dover’s manager, Jake Leberl, acknowledged the competitive nature of the game, noting that the scoreline could have been higher, but welcomed the late goal that earned his side a valuable point. He also expressed some frustration over conceding from a set-piece.

The match featured a number of noteworthy moments, including a strong early save by Morris from a 25-yard strike by Dover’s Bates and several close attempts on goal. The second half was more subdued in tempo compared to the first, with both teams focusing on defensive organisation before eventual breakthroughs.

Both clubs are set to face each other again in the FA Cup next Saturday, with the recent draw serving as a closely matched build-up to that fixture.
