Borussia Dortmund secured a commanding 5-0 victory against amateur side HEBC Hamburg in their German Cup opener on Tuesday. The match, held at the Volkspark Stadion in Hamburg, saw Dortmund dominate despite fielding a largely rotated squad.

Eighteen-year-old Samuele Inacio scored twice in the first half, setting the tone for Dortmund’s comfortable win. The visitors also benefited from an own goal by HEBC captain Janek Wrede, a scout for Bundesliga club Hamburg, and goals from Daniel Svensson and Fabio Silva. Silva, a former Wolverhampton Wanderers forward, added the final goal just before the hour mark.

HEBC Hamburg, a fifth-division team, had moved the fixture from their usual 2,500-seat ground to the 57,000-capacity Volkspark Stadion, home to Bundesliga side Hamburg. Although HEBC surrendered their home advantage, the match drew an official attendance of 45,917, marking a German Cup record for a game involving a fifth-tier club. Much of the revenue generated from the match is expected to benefit the amateur side.

Despite the scoreline, HEBC showed resilience in the early stages, keeping Dortmund at bay for the first 30 minutes. Their goalkeeper, Jannik Schoon, who works as a teacher aide, notably saved a long-range shot from Germany midfielder Felix Nmecha. Schoon had taken the day off work to participate in the fixture.

Dortmund coach Niko Kovac made seven changes to his starting lineup, though newly signed Ethan Nwaneri, who joined on a season-long loan from Arsenal on deadline day, was ineligible to play as he arrived too late to be registered for the match.

The German Cup round of 32 continues Wednesday with holders Bayern Munich scheduled to play against second-division side Osnabrück.
