Dozens of protesters were arrested and hundreds more warned of potential arrest during a demonstration outside the United States embassy in London on October 31. The protest, organized in support of Palestine Action, drew an estimated 400 participants who gathered on Nine Elms Lane in the Wandsworth area.

Police detained 48 individuals and continued to hold others as part of a broader enforcement operation throughout the day. A Section 35 dispersal order was imposed in parts of central London from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m., empowering officers to direct individuals to leave the area or face arrest in connection with the protest.

Palestinian flags and banners displaying slogans such as “I oppose genocide, I support Palestine Action” were visible among the demonstrators. The group Palestine Action has been proscribed under the Terrorism Act since June 2025, a designation upheld by the Court of Appeal in June 2026. Under this legislation, expressing support for the organization is considered a criminal offense.

Commander Adam Slonecki, leading the police operation, emphasized that attendees were aware that supporting a proscribed group is unlawful. He stated that the demonstration amounted to "meeting to purposefully commit a crime" and that enforcement efforts targeted not only those displaying placards but also individuals involved in organizing, directing, or providing logistical support for the event.

Slonecki clarified that the police response was not intended to suppress all forms of expression but aimed to address criminal conduct specifically connected to the proscribed status of Palestine Action. He also noted that policing such events diverts significant resources from other community needs, urging potential participants to reconsider involvement.

The police characterized their approach as proactive enforcement to uphold the law, while the demonstrators focused on raising awareness about their opposition to Israel’s policies toward Palestinians. The protest and arrests highlight ongoing tensions surrounding activism linked to Palestine Action and the legal ramifications of its proscription in the United Kingdom.
