The Democratic Republic of the Congo secured a historic advancement to the knockout stage of the World Cup with a 3-1 victory over Uzbekistan on Sunday in Atlanta. This marks the first time the Leopards have progressed beyond the group phase since their debut in the tournament in 1974, when the nation was known as Zaire.
Uzbekistan took an early lead with a goal from Eldor Shomurodov in the 10th minute, maintaining the advantage for more than half the match. However, the Leopards mounted a strong comeback in the second half, scoring three goals within a span of 23 minutes. Yoane Wissa emerged as a key figure, netting two of those goals, while Fiston Mayele also contributed to the persistent offensive surge.
The victory allowed DR Congo to finish third in Group K with a record of one win, one draw, and one loss, totaling four points. Goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi played a role in securing the win with several key saves. The team will remain in Atlanta to face England, the winner of Group L, in the round of 32 on Wednesday.
For Uzbekistan, eliminated after their debut World Cup campaign, the loss capped a tough group stage in which they failed to earn any points and were outscored 11-2 across three matches. Their 0-0-3 record marks the end of their tournament run, but the experience provides a foundation for future international competition.
