India’s Ministry of External Affairs announced on Friday the appointment of HE Dr. K Srikar Reddy as the country’s next ambassador to Qatar. Currently serving as India’s Consul General in San Francisco, California, Dr. Reddy is expected to assume his new role in Doha in the near future.

A native of Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district in Telangana, Dr. Reddy holds a medical degree from Kakatiya Medical College in Warangal. Over the course of his diplomatic career, he has held diverse assignments across multiple countries, including positions at Indian missions to the United Nations, the World Trade Organization, Switzerland, Germany, Vietnam, and the United States. He has also served within India’s Ministry of Commerce. This appointment marks Dr. Reddy’s first posting in the Arabian Gulf region.

The timing of the new ambassadorial role aligns with deepening ties between India and Qatar, particularly in areas such as energy, trade, investment, and the welfare of the sizable Indian expatriate population in Qatar. Indian nationals form one of the largest expatriate groups in the country, with recent estimates indicating the community numbers over 800,000 people.

Dr. Reddy replaces HE Vipul, the outgoing Indian ambassador to Qatar, who has been reassigned as India’s ambassador to Saudi Arabia. The changes reflect a broader diplomatic realignment amid ongoing efforts to strengthen India’s engagement in the Gulf region.
