The Wests Tigers' hopes of reaching the finals appear all but over following a 24-10 defeat to the St. George Illawarra Dragons on Saturday night. Despite remaining within four points of the top eight, the Tigers' performance raised questions about their prospects as they look ahead to the remainder of the season.
Adding to their troubles, Tigers captain Api Koroisau sustained a pectoral injury late in the second half, which is expected to sideline him for the rest of the year. His absence will be a significant blow to the team as they seek to end a 15-year finals drought.
The Dragons secured their second victory of the 2026 season with a determined display. At halftime, they led 6-4, but the Tigers briefly surged ahead to 10-6 early in the second half through a try by Adam Doueihi. However, two rapid tries from Valentine Holmes quickly reasserted the Dragons' advantage, effectively deciding the outcome.
Key to the Dragons’ success were forwards Loko Pasifi Tonga and brothers Toby and Ryan Couchman, whose physical presence and aggressive play in the midfield kept the Tigers under sustained pressure. Collectively, the trio amassed 327 metres, contributing significantly to the Dragons' offensive momentum.
Holmes had an outstanding evening, scoring two tries within a three-minute window that sealed the win. In addition, he contributed with four successful goal kicks and made three line breaks, highlighting his impact on both attack and scoring.
The Tigers struggled defensively, particularly with Sunia Turuva, who was played out of position on the wing and centre. Turuva was frequently targeted by the Dragons and his defensive lapses, including a tendency to rush up prematurely, allowed the Dragons to create overlaps and exploit gaps.
With the season slipping away, the Tigers face a challenging path forward as they attempt to salvage their campaign amidst key injuries and inconsistent performances. Meanwhile, the Dragons will look to build on this win as they seek to improve their standing in the competition.
