Sutton United secured a late equalizer to earn a 1-1 draw against FC Halifax Town at The Shay on Saturday, preserving their unbeaten run in the league. The dramatic finish came deep into stoppage time, with both teams sharing the points in a closely contested encounter.

The breakthrough appeared to arrive in the fourth minute of added time when Max Bardell headed the ball toward goal from a free kick delivered by Zac Gilsenan. The effort was deflected by Sutton defender Will Nightingale, diverting the ball past goalkeeper Spike Brits and sparking celebrations among the home supporters. However, the lead lasted less than a minute.

Almost immediately from the restart, Sutton launched a swift counterattack. Halifax failed to regain control, allowing substitute David Ogbonna to fire a close-range shot into the net, securing a dramatic equalizer for the visitors. The goal marked Sutton’s first league draw of the season.

Sutton manager Chris Agutter described the point as well-earned, highlighting his team’s positive performance throughout the match. “We had half a dozen good chances and caused them a lot of issues,” he said. “If we had lost, I would have been devastated. It’s the least we deserved.”

In contrast, Halifax head coach John McGrath expressed disappointment with his team’s inability to hold on to the lead so late in the game. “If you can’t see out games of football, then you don’t deserve to win games of football,” McGrath said. “For all the good work of 93 minutes, we’ve been done by someone not winning the ball. It wasn’t for a lack of trying.”

The match began with Sutton showing early intent, but Halifax gradually imposed themselves. Their first significant chance arrived when Dylan Crowe delivered a cross to Ben Tollitt, whose header was expertly saved by Sutton’s Brits. Sutton’s goalkeeper James Grant also made a crucial stop to tip Temi Babalola’s shot over the bar.

Halifax continued to press, with efforts from Will Hugill and Tollitt troubled the visitors’ defense. Tollitt remained a persistent threat on the wing, setting up opportunities for strikers, though Sutton’s defense and goalkeeper made several important interventions.

Halifax introduced Tristan Gill from the bench, marking his debut for the club. Attempts to secure a penalty late in the match after a challenge on Zac Gilsenan were dismissed by referee Declan Brown, adding to the tension.

Ultimately, both sides earned a point in a match that showcased competitive intensity and dramatic late moments, leaving Halifax frustrated but Sutton content with a hard-fought draw on the road.
