ATLANTA — The Atlanta Dream took a 1-0 lead in their WNBA semifinals series against the New York Liberty with a 92-82 victory Sunday, propelled by a strong all-around performance from Angel Reese. The newly named Defensive Player of the Year dominated defensively and contributed offensively, finishing with 17 points on 60 percent shooting, seven rebounds, four steals, and three blocks.

Reese’s physical play and intensity set the tone early, limiting Jonquel Jones, New York’s star forward, who managed 12 points on 4-of-9 shooting along with 11 rebounds, three assists, and five blocks. The matchup between Reese and Jones was a focal point, with Reese’s relentless effort helping Atlanta control the game’s pace and keep the Liberty from establishing consistent offensive momentum.

Jones reflected on her performance, emphasizing the need to replicate the aggressive and physical approach she demonstrated in New York’s first-round victory over Minnesota. In that Game 2, Jones had recorded 21 points, 13 rebounds, and two assists, powering the Liberty to a 2-0 series sweep. Her physicality and assertiveness were critical in that success, and both she and teammate Sabrina Ionescu acknowledge she must return to that form to shift the series.

Ionescu contributed 27 points on 50 percent shooting in Game 1 but struggled to facilitate her teammates, recording just one assist and five turnovers. She stressed the importance of finding ways to involve Jones and others more effectively on offense moving forward.

Atlanta’s defense was a key factor in the opening game, forcing 21 turnovers from New York and converting those mistakes into 32 points. The Dream have established themselves as one of the league’s most disruptive defensive units, especially in the playoffs, where opponents are averaging 21 turnovers per game against them.

For New York, reducing turnovers and improving ball control will be critical in minimizing Atlanta’s transition opportunities. The frontcourt matchup between Reese and Jones is also likely to be decisive in determining which team advances. With Reese’s dominant presence showing no signs of waning, Jones must regain her previous aggressive mindset to give the Liberty a chance in the series.

Game 2 is scheduled for Wednesday, with both teams looking to adjust and respond after the tightly contested opener.
