Britain’s first self-driving taxis have launched in London, marking a significant milestone in the development of autonomous vehicle technology. The service, operated by ride-hailing company Uber in partnership with British artificial intelligence firm Wayve, began carrying paying passengers on Thursday using a fleet of modified Ford Mustang Mach-E electric cars. These vehicles, equipped with advanced AI systems, currently include a safety driver behind the wheel as a precaution while the technology undergoes further regulatory approval.
The initial rollout involves around 15 cars operating within the M25 motorway area, with trips available through the Uber app. Passengers may be paired with a self-driving taxi, though they can opt for a human-driven vehicle instead. Currently, users cannot specifically request an autonomous car, but Uber plans to introduce this feature in the future. The self-driving taxis lock and unlock via the app, and the rear cabin includes a touchscreen for passengers to start their journey and follow their route on a live map.
The introduction of robotaxis in London comes amid broader global efforts by companies such as Waymo, Baidu, and other ride-hailing operators to capture market share in autonomous transport. While automated vehicles have been a vision of Silicon Valley for decades, recent advancements have brought the concept closer to public reality. However, the technology still faces challenges, particularly in navigating complex urban environments with unpredictable conditions. For example, a recent demonstration ride saw the vehicle momentarily stuck behind a parked car, requiring human intervention to resolve the situation.
Industry experts acknowledge that self-driving cars will not completely replace human drivers in the near term. Uber’s head of autonomous mobility, Wendy Lee, emphasized that there is no immediate rush to remove drivers entirely, with a gradual transition expected. Wayve’s chief executive, Alex Kendall, highlighted their AI system’s adaptability, which helped the taxis stop accurately and navigate London streets effectively, improving on some earlier autonomous vehicle shortcomings.
The launch has sparked debate over the implications for employment and safety. The union GMB expressed concern about job losses among taxi drivers and called on Transport for London and the government to develop strategies to protect workers and regulate operators during the transition. Conversely, Wayve pointed to potential job creation in new sectors related to autonomous vehicle maintenance and support. Public opinion remains mixed, with a recent poll indicating that 42% of Londoners are opposed to driverless cabs, citing safety and economic worries.
Financially, Uber is investing heavily in robotaxi technology, committing about £7 billion to its development even as it plans to cut 3,300 jobs globally, mainly in management roles. The company notes that while operating costs for autonomous vehicles are currently higher due to research and sensor expenses, long-term savings may lead to more affordable fares. More than 140,000 Londoners have already registered interest in using autonomous taxis, suggesting a significant market demand.
Experts agree that while autonomous taxis have reached an important milestone, widespread adoption and full driverless operation still depend on overcoming technical, regulatory, and societal hurdles, making this a gradual evolution rather than an immediate transformation.
