Authorities in Baghdad intercepted and shot down a drone near the city’s heavily fortified Green Zone on Tuesday, according to official statements from Iraqi security officials. The event caused a loud noise heard across parts of the Iraqi capital.
Iraq’s Security Media Cell confirmed that a drone was downed in the vicinity of the Green Zone, the area that houses government buildings and foreign diplomatic missions, including the U.S. embassy. Two Iraqi security sources reported that air defense systems belonging to the U.S. embassy were activated after detecting two drones approaching the Green Zone’s perimeter. Both drones were intercepted and shot down.
Debris from the downed drones was subsequently recovered from two different locations near the Green Zone. The incident has raised concerns about security vulnerabilities in the area, which has been a frequent target of drone and rocket attacks in recent years.
No immediate claims of responsibility were reported, and it remains unclear whether the drones were intended for surveillance or a hostile act. Iraqi authorities continue to investigate the incident, while U.S. embassy officials have not released a public statement. The event occurred amid ongoing tensions in the region, where various armed groups frequently target foreign and government sites.
