As the conflict in Ukraine marks its fourth year, the nature of combat continues to evolve, with drone warfare emerging as a critical front. Ukrainian forces are increasingly relying on unmanned aerial vehicles to conduct deep strikes against Russian targets, signaling a significant shift from traditional ground battles to technologically advanced aerial operations.
On the evening of July 21, Ukrainian soldiers from the 414th aviation brigade launched a series of drones aimed at disrupting Russian military infrastructure. Among these was a drone resembling a sleek, biplane-like craft, which after a flight of several hours reached the occupied Crimean city of Alushta. The drone targeted a 110kV electricity substation, igniting fires and causing damage amid darkness. This strike was part of a broader Ukrainian campaign dubbed the Crimean “switch off,” aimed at severing power and supply lines in areas controlled by Russian forces, including Crimea and parts of the Zaporizhzhia and Kherson provinces that Russia annexed.
Since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, Moscow has intensified nightly missile and drone assaults on Ukrainian cities, employing Iranian-designed Shaheed drones alongside ballistic and hypersonic missiles. These attacks have caused civilian casualties and infrastructure damage. In response, Ukraine has accelerated its domestic development of drone technology, transforming itself into a global leader in unmanned systems. The drones used in recent strikes, including those targeting Crimea, were manufactured by a Kyiv-based defense technology startup actively involved in operational deployments.
The unit responsible for many of these operations, named after Kairos—the Greek god of opportunity and decisive moments—is part of a larger brigade known as “Magyar’s Birds,” commanded by Robert Brovdi, head of Ukraine’s unmanned systems forces. The brigade has executed hundreds of precision strikes against Russian logistics hubs, oil facilities, warehouses, and transportation routes. Their efforts have extended to disrupting maritime activities in the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea, where over 200 Russian vessels have reportedly been damaged or destroyed.
According to Ukrainian commanders, sustained drone attacks have significantly weakened Russian air defenses. Brovdi stated that over 300 air defense systems have been neutralized, including recent strikes on the Russian port city of Yeysk. This depletion has forced the Kremlin to reallocate some defensive resources away from frontline positions to protect the Moscow region. Ukrainian forces aim to prevent Russia from utilizing Crimea as a strategic launching point for further attacks while exerting pressure on the peninsula’s military and civilian infrastructure.
Despite these tactical gains, Ukrainian commanders acknowledge that not all drone missions succeed. Approximately one-third are intercepted over occupied territory, with a higher loss rate over Russian-controlled areas. Nonetheless, the cumulative impact is evident in widespread power outages, fuel shortages, and logistical disruptions inside Crimea and other Russian-held zones. Ukrainian operators express confidence that sustained pressure will strain Russian military capabilities and erode morale.
The ongoing drone campaign accompanies intense ground combat in eastern Ukraine's Donbas region, where Russian forces continue efforts to advance despite significant costs. Ukrainian officials question the feasibility of Russia’s extended objectives in the conflict, highlighting the heavy toll on troops and materiel.
Amid this high-stakes environment, Ukrainian drone crews operate with a mix of resolute professionalism and a sense of historical purpose. Lt Col Ray of the 414th aviation brigade described their efforts as a fight for national survival and freedom. The covert nature of drone operations fosters a sense of elite duty among operators, who remain largely anonymous despite their critical role in the war effort.
