The United Kingdom is facing mounting challenges to its water supply as sustained high temperatures and prolonged dry weather strain reservoirs, rivers, and ecosystems. Experts have issued warnings about a potential widespread drought after a series of record-breaking heatwaves and minimal rainfall across large parts of the country.

The third major heatwave of the year has exacerbated already low water levels, causing ponds and wetlands to dry out and some rivers to shrink significantly or dry up in places. Several regions have experienced extended periods without rain, with Wisley in Surrey recording 34 consecutive days without measurable precipitation. According to Helen Wakeham, chair of the National Drought Group and director of water at the Environment Agency, the combination of dry conditions and increased water usage due to heat poses serious challenges for agriculture, wildlife, and water availability for both public and business consumption.

Prolonged dry weather, considered the preliminary stage before a formal drought declaration, has been identified in at least ten areas, including East Anglia, the West Midlands, Devon and Cornwall, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire, Hertfordshire, London, Wessex, Thames, and the South Downs. England received only around 3 percent of its average July rainfall, with some southern and eastern regions experiencing no measurable rain so far this month, marking the longest dry spell of this kind since the mid-1990s.

Many rivers across the country are running at below-normal levels. The River Avon, Cam, Derwent, and Wye have exhibited particularly low flows. Reservoirs are similarly affected, with six sites reported to have notably or exceptionally low water volumes. The diminished water levels have impeded the migration of fish species such as the Atlantic salmon, while wildlife breeding cycles are under threat. Notably, the rare natterjack toad has suffered due to insufficient spawning pools, and the Environment Agency has conducted fish rescues in response to declining oxygen levels in rivers.

Agricultural impacts are also significant. Farmers in East Anglia have ceased drawing water from local rivers owing to depleted flows and have begun harvesting crops early. These conditions have prompted warnings of reduced cereal yields across affected areas. In addition, the hot and dry environment has heightened the risk of wildfires, which have already affected multiple locations. The Peak District has seen two major moorland fire incidents, and a total of 53 wildfires have been recorded at Sites of Special Scientific Interest so far this year.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as the UK contends with one of the most severe dry spells in recent decades, with efforts underway to manage water resources and mitigate the environmental and economic impacts.
