Brendan Nugent allegedly drove his vehicle into federal politician Helen Haines outside her Wangaratta electorate office on Monday afternoon, an incident that has deeply affected his fractured family. The attack came just three days after a significant legal arrangement was finalised by his father, Rodney Nugent, aimed at securing Brendan’s long-term residence in a family-owned property near Wangaratta.
The property in question, a three-bedroom house on Greater Alpine Road located approximately 10 minutes from Wangaratta, had been owned by Rodney Nugent and his daughter Jessica through a family superannuation fund since 2015. Concerned about the future of the property and Brendan’s living situation, Rodney Nugent initiated legal proceedings earlier this month to transfer the home from the super fund into his own name. This transfer, completed on October 16, was intended to simplify the process of bequeathing the property to Brendan in his will.
Sources close to the family indicated that Brendan, 43, was unaware of the property transfer arrangements. The move occurred amid a strained relationship between father and son, who had not communicated directly for nearly ten months following a New Year’s Eve party last year. The event reportedly worsened existing family tensions, leading to the family employing a mediator to manage contact with Brendan, who had recently dismissed the mediator’s services.
Rodney Nugent, aged 74, had been concerned about Brendan’s unstable lifestyle, which included marijuana use and unemployment, and the state of the house, described as cluttered with trash and empty beer bottles. Despite the difficulties, the property—although not in good condition—provided Brendan with shelter.
The alleged attack on Helen Haines has resulted in Brendan Nugent facing five charges and his subsequent detention. The incident has unfolded against the backdrop of a family struggling with personal disputes, legal complexities, and long-standing concerns about Brendan’s well-being and future. No contact was made between Brendan and his father on the latter’s 74th birthday, the day following the legal finalisation and shortly before the incident involving Ms. Haines.
