A 25-year-old dual British-Iranian national was released on bail Saturday following his arrest on suspicion of planning a terrorist attack near a US-operated military air base in England. The man was detained Thursday in London in connection with a security incident at RAF Fairford, an air base used by American bombers for operations targeting Iran.
He is the sixth individual taken into custody in relation to the ongoing investigation. All five others, who remain unnamed, are British nationals in their twenties from London and have also been released on bail.
The incident prompted a significant emergency response early Sunday, with armed police and military bomb-disposal teams evacuating numerous residents living near the rural RAF Fairford base. During the search, authorities discovered gasoline stored in three vans linked to the five British suspects. While the accelerant was found, no explosives were recovered.
British officials have pointed to involvement by Tehran in the incident. Prime Minister Andy Burnham stated that the UK had "strong indications" of Iran’s role but did not elaborate on the precise nature of the plot or how the intelligence was obtained.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident as they assess potential threats connected to the strategic military site. The case highlights ongoing security concerns amid heightened tensions linked to military activities involving the United States and Iran.
