Dubai has initiated an Dh80 million project to illuminate Dubai Creek, aiming to enhance the historic waterfront and establish it as a prominent nighttime destination. The initiative, directed by Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Dubai Executive Council, seeks to combine cultural heritage with modern lighting design to create an immersive visual experience.
The project will extend along eight kilometers of the creek, utilizing over 5,000 lighting units to accentuate waterfront areas, historic districts, and notable architectural landmarks. The lighting display is designed to be visible from more than 1,500 feet above ground, contributing to a distinctive night skyline that highlights the area's significance as the historic trade hub where Dubai’s transformation into a global city began.
Covering six key sites—Creek Quay, Creek Promenade at the Gold Souq, Creek entrance at Infinity Bridge, Al Shindagha Historic District, Bur Dubai Souq, and Al Seef Marina—the project will feature site-specific lighting schemes tailored to each location’s unique identity while respecting the historic character of the creek.
Dubai Municipality emphasized that the design incorporates sustainability principles to reduce environmental impact, particularly regarding marine life in the creek. The lighting technology selected aims to minimise ecological disruption while improving the waterfront’s aesthetic appeal after dark.
In addition to the lighting installations, upgrades will be made to promenade lighting, waterfront walkways, entrances to the creek, and building facades to enhance pedestrian safety and accessibility. This comprehensive enhancement aligns with broader urban development goals, supporting the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan and the Dubai Quality of Life Strategy 2033. Both frameworks prioritize creating more inviting, people-focused public spaces to improve residents’ quality of life and attract visitors.
The Dubai Creek Lights project reflects the city’s ongoing commitment to preserving its heritage while advancing infrastructure to sustain its status as a leading global destination.
