Dubai is set to transform a section of Sheikh Zayed Road into a cycling route this Sunday, November 1, as part of the Dubai Ride event marking the launch of the Dubai Fitness Challenge. This free event provides two route options: a 12-kilometer ride along Sheikh Zayed Road designed for experienced cyclists, and a 4-kilometer family loop through Downtown Dubai suited for riders of all ages and abilities.
Registration is compulsory, despite the event’s free entry. Participants must visit the Dubai Fitness Challenge website to create an account and select their preferred route and start gate. Each adult must register individually, while parents or legal guardians can register up to three children, with a required waiver acceptance for minors. Registration cannot be modified after submission, although cancellations and re-registrations are permitted. Those registered will receive a QR code necessary for bib and optional T-shirt collection.
Bibs and T-shirts will be available for pickup at the Dubai Municipality 30x30 Fitness Village at Zabeel Park through Saturday. Collection requires presenting the registration QR code. Those without a bib will be barred from participating, and lost bibs cannot be replaced without re-registering.
The event begins early, with recommended arrival between 4 a.m. and 6 a.m. Cycling starts at 6:15 a.m. and all participants must begin their ride by 7:30 a.m. Routes will reopen to traffic by 8:15 a.m. To accommodate participants, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has designated three parking areas close to the event: Dubai World Trade Centre Parking, Dubai Mall Parking, and Dubai Mall Zabeel Parking. Organizers encourage arriving early due to these time constraints.
The 12-kilometer route starts at one of five locations—Museum of the Future, Al Satwa, Coca-Cola Arena, Business Bay, and Lower Financial Street—passing key landmarks including the Dubai Water Canal and Burj Khalifa. Participants must finish at the start gate they select. The family-friendly 4-kilometer loop passes sites such as Dubai Mall, Dubai Opera, and Burj Khalifa and is intended to be accessible to all skill levels.
All participants must use a bicycle in good working condition. Road, hybrid, mountain, and children’s bikes are allowed, as are tandem bikes, handcycles, and pedal-assisted e-bikes. Motorized vehicles, including e-scooters and motorbikes, are prohibited. Helmets are mandatory for all riders, including children in bike seats or trailers. Participants are advised to wear closed sports shoes and appropriate attire, and to bring a filled water bottle to refill at hydration stations along the route.
Bike rentals will not be provided on-site this year. Although previous editions offered free rentals through Careem Bike and the RTA, no such arrangement has yet been announced for this edition. Interested riders should seek rental services independently or monitor official channels for updates.
Public transportation will operate as usual, but bicycles are not permitted on the Dubai Metro, so participants should plan accordingly. Roads along the cycling routes will be temporarily closed on the event day, with updates available on RTA social media channels.
On the course, cyclists will have access to both fixed and mobile bike mechanics for minor repairs. Medical support and volunteers will be stationed throughout, identifiable by their green and blue jerseys, and assistance can be summoned via designated marshals or by calling emergency number 901. Toilet facilities will be available at start and finish points, though attendees are encouraged to prepare beforehand.
The Dubai Ride event provides a safe, organized opportunity for residents and visitors to participate in the city’s growing active lifestyle initiatives during the Dubai Fitness Challenge.
