A pair of handcrafted gold earrings weighing more than 16 kilograms has set two new Guinness World Records in Dubai, further cementing the emirate’s status as a global hub for gold jewelry. Named Mayura Sahasra, which translates to “A Thousand Peacocks,” the 22-carat gold jhumkas were created by Joyalukkas Jewellery and recognised as both the heaviest and largest pair of gold earrings.

The earrings, unveiled on October 24 at the Jewel of Joy showroom located in Dubai Gold District, measure 1.215 meters in length and 0.682 meters in diameter. The project required 5,840 hours of labour from 55 skilled artisans working over several months to complete. Abdulla Bin Touq Al Marri, UAE Minister of Economy and Tourism, officiated the unveiling ceremony, which was attended by industry representatives and other dignitaries.

John Paul Alukkas, CEO of Joyalukkas Jewellery, explained that the inspiration for the record-breaking creation emerged from the firm’s 40-year presence in the UAE and its observation of Dubai’s rapid development. “We’ve seen a lot of records which Dubai has broken and we thought we should do something which we can give back to Dubai,” he said. The project was conceived as a contribution to Dubai’s reputation as the “city of gold,” aiming to complement the emirate’s longstanding association with gold trade and craftsmanship.

The Mayura Sahasra earrings were revealed shortly after the launch of the Jewel of Joy showroom, which is claimed to be the largest jewellery retail space in the Middle East. The CEO invited both residents and visitors to Dubai to experience the display and witness the craftsmanship firsthand.

The achievement highlights Dubai's ongoing efforts to maintain its position in the global luxury goods market, particularly in the highly competitive jewellery sector. The new records serve not only as a showcase of artisanal skill but also as a symbol of the city's continuing economic evolution.
