Ari Emanuel, chairman of the WME talent agency and the personal representative of the Duchess of Sussex since 2023, has explained his decision to delegate much of the management of Meghan and Prince Harry’s careers to his team last year. Speaking in an interview on US radio, Emanuel said he chose to focus on his “priority” clients rather than take a hands-on approach with the Sussexes, citing a desire to avoid being a “helicopter parent” in his professional role.
Emanuel, 65, who continues to represent high-profile figures such as Oprah Winfrey, Mark Wahlberg, and Dwayne Johnson, said he had “a lot on [his] plate” and felt it was more effective to allow subordinates to handle the Sussexes’ needs and facilitate their projects. “When I’m involved with someone constantly, when I wake up in the morning, clients occupy my brain,” he said, likening managing the couple to raising his own four children and emphasizing the importance of giving clients space to grow.
The couple relocated from California to the Cotswolds earlier this year, a move that Emanuel referenced as part of their transition. Regarding Meghan’s ongoing career developments, he indicated that she is being positioned for multiple projects, addressing recent speculation about her possible role in the third season of the Netflix series *The Gentlemen*. “She is finding her voice — I am happy for her,” Emanuel added.
Emanuel’s comments highlight the balancing act faced by talent agents managing high-profile clients with diverse commitments. While he has stepped back from day-to-day involvement, his agency continues to support the Sussexes’ career endeavors through other representatives. The shift underscores a broader industry practice where senior agents often delegate responsibilities to ensure focused attention on a broad client roster.
