Dumonet secured his first local victory in Qatar by winning the Group 3 Barzan Cup at Al Rayyan Racecourse on Thursday, marking the four-year-old bay gelding’s fifth career win. The 1600-meter Thoroughbred feature was part of the sixth meeting of the Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club’s (QREC) domestic season, which included nine races and showcased the Guineas and Barzan Cup events.
Trained by Ibrahim Saeed Al Malki and ridden by jockey Patrick Cosgrave, Dumonet stayed close to the front throughout the race before making a decisive late surge in the final 100 meters, narrowly defeating Thor’s Hammer by a neck. Evergreen finished a head behind Thor’s Hammer to place third. The horse is owned by Nasser Essa Al Kuwari. The Barzan Cup trophy was presented by QREC Chairman Hamad bin Abdulrahman Al Attiyah.
In another highlight of the evening, Reverberate captured the Group 3 Thoroughbred Guineas with a narrow neck victory over August George. The chestnut gelding, owned by Fahad Ali Al Arumaihi and trained by Hamad Al Jehani, improved on his third-place result during his seasonal reappearance. Jockey Pierre-Charles Boudot, who rode Reverberate, also completed a treble on the card alongside trainer Al Jehani. The Guineas trophy was also presented by Al Attiyah.
Dinar, a grey gelding making his debut, impressed by coming from behind to win the Local Thoroughbred Guineas. Representing Wathnan Racing and trained by Alban de Mieulle, Dinar was guided to victory by jockey Jefferson Smith. Al Attiyah presented the trophy for this race as well.
Khaddah claimed the Purebred Arabian Guineas for four-year-olds, rebounding from a runner-up finish in a Group 3 contest in Warsaw the previous month. The grey colt, owned by Wathnan Racing and trained by de Mieulle, pulled clear in the final stages to win by two and a half lengths under jockey Soufiane Saadi. The trophy was presented by Eng. Osama Omer Al Dafea.
In another Purebred Arabian event, Ghara made a successful seasonal return by winning the 2000-meter Sheraouh Island Cup. The five-year-old mare, racing for Al Wasmiyah Farm and trained by Hamad Al Jehani, produced a strong finish to win by a length under jockey Pierre-Charles Boudot. Ghara had previously finished second in the Group 1 Qatar Gold Sword in April. The trophy was presented by QREC Racing Manager Abdulla bin Rashid Al Kubaisi.
Additional races at the meeting saw Forceful Speed, Itemad Al Shahania, and Cuban Heels taking victories in their respective categories. The event highlighted the competitive spirit and depth of Qatar’s thoroughbred and Arabian racing scenes as the season continues.
