A Dutch company has unveiled what it calls the world’s first fossil fuel-free powered sailing superyacht, marking a significant development in sustainable luxury marine travel. The 68.9-meter vessel, named Zero, was developed over seven years by Vitters Yachts and incorporates advanced renewable energy technologies to operate without relying on diesel fuel.
Zero is equipped with underwater turbine propellers that generate hydroelectric power as the yacht moves through the water, eliminating the need for traditional combustion engines. This hydroelectric system is supplemented by photovoltaic thermal panels installed on the vessel’s surface that produce both heat and electricity. The entire energy system runs on a 700-volt DC electrical grid. The hull design, created with input from America's Cup Emirates Team New Zealand, features a curved topside intended to enhance efficiency, reportedly increasing speed by 2.5 percent and boosting electric power generation by 8 percent. These innovations enable the yacht to cruise for up to two weeks solely on renewable energy.
The yacht was recently moved out of Vitters’ construction hall in Zwartsluis, Netherlands, onto a barge for transport through Dutch canals as part of preparations ahead of upcoming sea trials. These tests will evaluate Zero’s operational efficiency and performance on the water. While the company has not disclosed the vessel’s cost, industry standards suggest diesel-powered superyachts of similar size typically carry price tags around £60 million.
Louis Hamming, chief executive of Vitters, emphasized the project’s environmental aspirations, stating the company hopes to demonstrate how innovative collaboration can contribute to making marine travel more sustainable. Vitters plans to share all technical specifications and performance data publicly through Foundation Zero to encourage wider adoption of eco-friendly technologies within the yachting industry.
The yacht’s interior was designed by Vripack and Dykstra Naval Architects, featuring four guest cabins and an owner’s suite. The design team prioritized aesthetics alongside sustainability, incorporating elements such as extensive hand-selected oak veneer, electric windows that can seal the cockpit at the push of a button, and a versatile main saloon dining table that also functions as a craft workspace.
Industry experts note a growing trend toward environmental responsibility among superyacht owners, partly driven by younger generations seeking greener alternatives. However, cost remains a constraint, with hybrid or fully electric propulsion systems currently carrying higher price points than conventional diesel engines.
The move toward sustainable yachting aligns with broader efforts by the International Maritime Organization, which has set a roadmap targeting net-zero carbon emissions from shipping by 2050. According to a 2024 study by Oxfam, the average diesel-powered superyacht emits about 5,672 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually—equal to the lifetime emissions of an average individual over 860 years—highlighting the environmental impact of the current status quo and the potential significance of innovations like the Zero.
