Dutch authorities apprehended 34 individuals, including nationals from France, Belgium, and Algeria, following a pre-dawn gunfight in the eastern town of Overasselt near the German border. The confrontation, which unfolded at approximately 4 a.m. local time, left one person dead and led police to advise residents to remain indoors with doors and windows closed as a precaution against any remaining suspects.
The incident began when a group of heavily armed men wearing balaclavas approached a residence in Overasselt, triggering an exchange of gunfire. The fatality was identified as a 51-year-old man, reportedly serving as a security guard. Police units arriving on the scene were also met with gunfire, resulting in injuries to two officers; their conditions were reported as non-life-threatening.
Authorities seized various firearms, data storage devices, and vehicles as part of their response. Police spokeswoman Jolanda Aalbers confirmed the arrests but declined to elaborate on the identities of those detained.
Local media reports have linked the shootout to the criminal operations of Jos Leijdekkers, a notorious Dutch drug lord known by the nickname "Bolle Jos." Leijdekkers is recognized as one of the Netherlands’ most wanted individuals and has a history of conviction related to international cocaine trafficking. He is believed to currently reside in Sierra Leone and, according to some reports, is romantically connected to the daughter of Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio.
A regional newspaper suggested the gunfight may have stemmed from a dispute over several hundred kilograms of cocaine purportedly trafficked by Leijdekkers’ network. Deputy Chief Prosecutor Monique Vinkesteijn acknowledged that the location had been the site of a previous shooting last year, tied to a "longstanding conflict," but withheld further information due to the ongoing nature of the investigation. She added that the group now in custody consists of individuals from multiple countries.
The incident highlights the ongoing challenges Dutch law enforcement faces in confronting international drug trafficking and associated violence, particularly in border regions. Investigations are continuing as authorities work to piece together the full scope of the conflict and any broader criminal connections.
