Elgin Community College (ECC) has opened a new $88 million Manufacturing and Technology Center, significantly expanding its capacity to train students in welding, fabrication, advanced manufacturing, robotics, and HVAC-related fields. The 150,000-square-foot facility, more than three times larger than the previous space in Building O, aims to enhance hands-on learning opportunities and support growing demand for skilled workers in these technical areas.
The center will officially open to the public with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and tours scheduled for Sept. 24. Cathy Taylor, ECC’s dean of sustainability, business, and career technologies, highlighted the variety of programs housed in the building, including automation, robotics and maintenance technology, and green energy systems.
Instructional coordinator for HVAC, Reyes Estrada, described the new center as transformational compared to the old facility, which was cramped and unable to accommodate all interested students. The expanded space allows for individual stations with immediate access to equipment, rather than multiple classes sharing a single lab. Welding students also benefit from integrated video technology that enables better visualization of techniques without crowding around instructors.
Student enrollment across the manufacturing and technology programs increased by 15% this fall, with 586 students registered across 98 classes offered throughout the day and evening. Emily Ponce-Marquez, who is completing her final semester in the welding and fabrication program, noted the advantage of training in the new center. Ponce-Marquez, who works as an adjunct welding instructor at ECC and plans to follow in her father’s footsteps in the welding trade, praised welding as both a skill and an art.
The new building includes eight labs outfitted with industry-standard machinery, outdoor workspaces designed for training in various weather conditions, classrooms, collaborative areas, and stadium-style seating in an atrium intended to host classes for local middle and high school students. A systems control room provides students with real-time monitoring of building functions, including its geothermal heating and cooling system, which serves as an additional educational tool.
The $88 million project was funded through a combination of $27 million from ECC’s resources, $33 million raised via a bond sale, and approximately $28 million from state funds. Federal contributions included $2 million secured by U.S. Representative Raja Krishnamoorthi and an additional $936,000 to enhance mechatronics and automation programs.
ECC administrators are currently determining future uses for the now-vacant Building O, as the institution continues to expand its technical education offerings to meet workforce needs in the region.
