British technology company Dyson has introduced an AI-powered toothbrush designed to enhance oral hygiene through advanced imaging and targeted cleaning. The device, named the Dyson CameraJet, combines real-time visual scanning with precision mouthrinse delivery to address plaque and debris in hard-to-reach areas.
The CameraJet features a miniature pixel macro camera that captures 28 images per second inside the user’s mouth. This technology allows the toothbrush to continuously identify and track gaps between teeth during brushing. Upon detecting these spaces, the device emits a focused jet of mouthrinse directly into the crevices to eliminate plaque more effectively than traditional brushing alone.
Dyson claims this approach provides a deeper clean that could reduce or eliminate the need for flossing, a routine often neglected due to inconvenience. The toothbrush head incorporates dual bristles aimed at polishing teeth while promoting gum health. The product is also fully Wi-Fi enabled, allowing users to connect the device to a smartphone app to view live footage and monitor their brushing technique in real time.
Additional features include a smart docking station that maintains the device’s battery charge and a range of complementary oral care products, such as toothpaste and mouthrinse, developed to work in tandem with the CameraJet.
The toothbrush represents six years of development, with Dyson focusing on refining the imaging and cleaning technologies before its market release. The CameraJet launched this month and is available for purchase at a retail price of £419.99.
James Dyson, founder and chief engineer, described the motivation behind the product: “Flossing is an awkward and time-consuming chore. Few of us do it even though we know we should. We wanted to solve three fundamental problems: how to see those gaps, remove plaque and improve cleaning performance while brushing.”
The device aims to offer consumers a technologically sophisticated alternative to traditional oral hygiene practices, leveraging artificial intelligence to target problem areas for improved dental care outcomes.
