Two children have been hospitalised following the detection of extremely high levels of E. coli bacteria in Christchurch Harbour, a popular water sports area on the south coast of England. Pollution tests conducted on the River Stour and River Avon, which both flow into the harbour in Dorset, revealed a significant surge in the potentially harmful bacteria over recent weeks.
The two children, who had been in contact with water from the harbour, were treated in hospital; one had been paddleboarding and reportedly had a cut on their foot. Additionally, a local rowing club member reported falling seriously ill with symptoms consistent with an E. coli infection, raising concerns among community volunteers that more people could be affected.
Martin Stewart, chairman of the Christchurch Harbour & Marine Society (Chams), a volunteer group dedicated to monitoring water quality, described the contamination levels as alarming. Tests on the River Stour on August 15 recorded E. coli concentrations of 130,000 colony forming units per 100 millilitres, rising to 370,000 by August 19. These figures far exceed the European Union standard for safe bathing water, which sets the limit at no more than 1,000 colony forming units.
Stewart expressed uncertainty about the contamination's source but emphasised the severity of the situation, calling it a “scandal.” The harbour’s vulnerability to pollution is linked to its geography; both rivers pass through agricultural land with cattle grazing, nearby construction sites, and sewage treatment facilities before entering the harbour. The narrow mouth of Christchurch Harbour restricts water flow, making it difficult for pollutants to be flushed out to sea before the next high tide. This has previously earned the area the nickname "the toilet bowl of Bournemouth."
The Environment Agency has responded by dispatching a team to collect additional water samples and is investigating the potential involvement of local sewage plants operated by Wessex Water. Efforts are ongoing to identify the contamination's exact origin and prevent further public health risks.
While authorities have not yet confirmed the direct cause of illness in the affected individuals, the timing and circumstances suggest a link to E. coli exposure from the harbour waters. Local residents and water users have been urged to exercise caution until more definitive information is available.
