Alexandra Eala staged a comeback victory against Talia Gibson at the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo on Wednesday, advancing to the quarter-finals with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 win. The 21-year-old Philippine player, ranked 19th in the world, overcame a first-set loss to Australian Gibson, who is ranked 38th, to secure the win.
Eala, who made history in August as the first Filipino to claim a WTA Tour title, struggled early as Gibson capitalized on opportunities to take the opening set. However, Eala gradually raised her level of play, attributing her turnaround to small tactical adjustments during crucial points. “Maybe just a couple of small details that when accumulated make a big difference,” she said after the match, noting key moments such as going for certain shots during 30-all or deuce situations.
The momentum shifted in the second set, with Eala beginning to assert control despite letting Gibson escape on several occasions. By the third set, Eala dominated, breaking Gibson’s serve six times and delivering nine aces en route to closing out the match after Gibson netted a return. She acknowledged the impact of strong crowd support, describing the atmosphere as “great” and a factor that helped maintain her focus.
Eala’s next opponent is Russia’s third seed Diana Shnaider, who advanced to the quarter-finals by defeating Aliaksandra Sasnowich of Belarus 6-3, 6-7 (5/7), 6-3. Shnaider’s victory sets up a high-stakes matchup with Eala in the next round.
Meanwhile, top-ranked Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan is scheduled to make her tournament debut on Thursday against compatriot Yulia Putintseva. The Pan Pacific Open continues to attract strong competition as it progresses into the latter stages.
