England’s rugby coaching staff are carefully weighing their options ahead of Saturday’s Nations Championship match against Argentina in Santiago del Estero, as the debate intensifies over whether to start Henry Pollock or Ben Earl in the No 8 position.

Pollock, 21, made a notable impact off the bench in last weekend’s commanding 73-8 victory over Fiji, scoring a hat-trick of tries in just 32 minutes. His dynamic performance has prompted calls from former internationals Ben Youngs, Chris Ashton, and Jeremy Guscott to elevate him into the starting lineup. However, Earl remains a key figure for England, consistently delivering strong performances and serving as the team’s primary ball carrier throughout Steve Borthwick’s tenure as head coach.

After two rounds in the Nations Championship, Earl ranks third overall in ball carries, frequently gaining significant ground directly into the opposition’s defensive line. This highlights his role as a vital component of England’s forward pack, creating pressure and momentum in their play.

Senior assistant coach Richard Wigglesworth, a former England scrumhalf, emphasized that both players are being seriously considered for the starting role. “There’s no resistance to Henry playing but Ben Earl has been one of our best players for a long, long time,” Wigglesworth said. He acknowledged the intense competition for positions as healthy for the squad, noting that while there is enthusiasm to introduce Pollock, there is less appetite to remove Earl from the team.

Pollock has earned 12 international caps, predominantly as an impact substitute, and is expected to continue in this role against the Pumas. Wigglesworth defended the cautious approach to integrating Pollock as a starter, citing his rapid ascent through the ranks—from England Under-20s to the senior squad within the same Six Nations campaign—as evidence of trust in his development. Pollock also toured with the British and Irish Lions last year, solidifying his credentials at the highest level.

Beyond the No 8 debate, there is speculation over England’s midfield pairing. Seb Atkinson and Henry Slade started against Fiji, but their partnership may be reshaped if Benhard Janse van Rensburg is promoted to the midfield, adding further intrigue to the selection decisions ahead of the final match of England’s July tour.

England are expected to announce their team lineup later today, with coaching staff balancing the need for fresh impact and the value of established consistency as they prepare to face Argentina on Saturday.
