Matt West, an electric vehicle expert and electronics engineer from near Oxford, has reported annual savings of around £300 after installing a plug-in solar panel system in his garden. West, who completed the installation independently in July, expects these savings to exceed government forecasts for such systems.
West, 57, purchased four 465-watt solar panels commonly used for rooftop installations, paired with an 800-watt microinverter. He connected the system directly to his home’s electrical supply using a standard plug. Although the setup limits power generation to 800 watts, West said the system has exceeded his initial expectations in performance.
“I was curious about what plug-in solar could do,” West said, noting his dual interest in reducing energy bills and understanding the technical aspects of the technology. Despite initial doubts about whether 800 watts could effectively power household appliances like kettles and toasters, he found the system capable of meeting typical energy needs during peak generation periods.
Over the course of two summer months, West recorded weekly energy generation valued at approximately £13, with about half of the electricity fed back into the National Grid. This results in net savings of roughly £6.50 per week, which West extrapolates to an annual amount near £338.
West shares insights from his experience on his YouTube channel, Matt Goes Electric, hoping to provide practical guidance for others considering similar plug-and-play solar solutions. His case highlights the potential for household solar systems to contribute to energy savings and grid support, albeit with some limitations due to power caps imposed on plug-in setups.
