A magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck the Andes region of Peru late Saturday, resulting in at least six fatalities, injuries to more than 30 individuals, and the displacement of approximately 300 residents, officials reported.

According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake occurred at 9:24 p.m. local time, with the epicenter located about 2 kilometers west-southwest of Sicaya, a city in the Huancayo province. The quake's depth was measured at 10 kilometers.

The seismic event caused significant damage to infrastructure, with several buildings collapsing or sustaining structural harm. Notably, the local church and convent were among the affected structures. Emergency services have been mobilized to assist those injured and provide shelter for those displaced by the quake.

Authorities continue to assess the full extent of the damage and impact on the local communities, as rescue and recovery efforts remain underway.
