Eastbourne Borough extended their winning streak to nine matches across all competitions with a 1-0 victory over Isthmian League Premier leaders Welling United on Saturday. The decisive goal came from Josh Rees shortly before halftime, securing the win for Steve King’s side against his former club.

The match, played at Eastbourne’s home ground, began cautiously as both teams looked to assert control. The first half remained relatively subdued until Eastbourne increased their attacking pressure. Freddie Carter’s early cross threatened the Welling defense, while Terrell Egbri’s free-kick created an opportunity for Rees, whose initial header was saved by Welling goalkeeper Philip Ogayi.

The breakthrough arrived just before the 25-minute mark. A long ball allowed Darren McQueen to outpace the Welling defensive line before delivering a cut-back to Rees on the edge of the penalty area. Rees skillfully struck a left-footed shot into the top corner, giving the hosts the lead.

Welling responded by mounting pressure, with Arthur Grout forcing Ogayi to make a save, and Ogayi himself tipping a deflected attempt from Shay Harrison around the post. Eastbourne continued to press after the interval, with McQueen setting up Grout for a close-range shot that went over the crossbar. Harry Phipps, returning from injury, also came close with a headed effort from an Egbri free-kick that narrowly missed.

Although Welling sought to capitalize on counterattacks, Eastbourne’s resilient defense limited their chances. Egbri found himself in a promising position after a failed offside trap but opted to shoot and sent the ball wide of the target. Welling’s closest attempt to equalize came during a frantic scramble in front of goal when Nathan Cooper attempted a bicycle kick off target, followed by a strong save by Eastbourne keeper Lewis Carey.

In the closing stages, Welling intensified their efforts, with Ogayi joining the attack for a late corner. Nahum Melvin-Lambert’s volley was tipped away by Carey, preserving Eastbourne’s narrow lead. Despite Welling’s persistent pressure in the final minutes, the visitors were unable to find an equalizer, allowing Eastbourne Borough to secure a ninth consecutive victory.
