Eastleigh secured a late 1-0 victory over Hartlepool United at Victoria Park on Friday, thanks to Nelson Khumbeni’s stoppage-time goal, in a match marked by a contentious red card decision.

The two teams each created key scoring chances in the first half. Hartlepool striker Will Harris was denied by Eastleigh goalkeeper Nick Townsend, while Aaron Blair’s shot for the Spitfires was cleared off the line by Brooklyn Ilunga. The match’s physicality intensified shortly before halftime when Hartlepool full-back Neo Eccleston and Eastleigh’s Temi Eweka clashed, resulting in a yellow card for Eccleston. Hartlepool players and staff appeared to expect a harsher penalty, but none was given at that time.

The controversy deepened early in the second half when Eccleston received a second yellow card and was dismissed after appearing to slip during a challenge with Josh Lundstram. Eastleigh played with a numerical advantage for the remainder of the match but struggled to capitalize, as Hartlepool substitute Jack Nolan came close to scoring twice in the final minutes.

Ultimately, it was an Eastleigh substitute who decided the outcome, with Khumbeni firing home a decisive goal five minutes into added time, securing the Spitfires a hard-fought win on their 600-mile journey to the northeast.

Eastleigh manager Matt Gray praised his team’s resilience and the support of their traveling fans after the match. “It was a really eventful evening, chances for both teams, an action-packed evening and for us to go and get the winner at the end, I’m delighted,” Gray said. He acknowledged the players’ collective effort in withstanding early pressure and expressed satisfaction in being able to celebrate the victory with supporters who made the lengthy trip.

Hartlepool head coach Lee Clark refrained from explicitly criticizing the red card incident but suggested that those present shared a similar view about the officiating. “I don’t want to be giving my hard-earned money away to someone else because I say the wrong thing. You’ve seen the game, everyone in the stadium has seen the game. Everybody in the stadium had the same feeling so I’ll let you make your judgement on that,” Clark said.

The result leaves Eastleigh with three points as they continue their campaign, while Hartlepool are left to rue the dismissal that ultimately proved pivotal.
