Eastleigh secured a 4-2 victory over Boston United on Saturday, ending a four-match winless streak in an encounter characterized by rapid shifts in momentum and multiple goals in a tumultuous first half. The match at the Silverlake Stadium saw Eastleigh’s Aaron Blair score a hat-trick, including a decisive injury-time goal, while Dion Rankine also contributed for the home side. Boston’s Lenell John-Lewis and Jake Rooney netted for the visitors.
Eastleigh manager Matt Gray praised Blair’s performance, highlighting the striker’s goal-scoring prowess and impact, especially in a challenging season that had seen low expectations and tough results. “He’s a poacher, a threat in behind and a good goalscorer,” said Gray, noting Blair’s 17 goals from the previous season. “Everyone backed us to be rock-bottom and go down in pre-season. It’s been tough, it has been really tough. To bounce back today just turned the flow again.”
The game’s early intensity belied the typical pace of non-league competition, with both sides exchanging four goals in a ten-minute spell before halftime. The first breakthrough came in the 22nd minute when Blair capitalized on a loose ball inside the six-yard box following a cross from Max Dickov. Boston responded with a controversial penalty awarded after an incident involving Eastleigh captain Jordan Cousins and Boston’s Oliver Bostock. John-Lewis successfully converted the spot-kick to level the score at 1-1.
Less than two minutes later, Eastleigh regained the lead through Blair, who finished off a headed pass from Ibrahim Bakare inside the penalty area. Boston quickly equalized again in the 31st minute, with Rooney striking from close range after a cutback from Lennon Wheeldon.
Goalkeeper Louis Chadwick was called into action multiple times in a fast-paced first 45 minutes, making crucial saves to keep the visitors in the match. However, no further goals were scored before halftime.
The second half started cautiously but soon rekindled Eastleigh’s advantage in the 60th minute when Rankine volleyed a well-controlled effort into the net after a precise touch to set himself up. Boston pushed hard for an equalizer, with Bostock and John-Lewis coming close and a Ken Aboh goal ruled out for handball, but Eastleigh’s defense and goalkeeper Nick Townsend held firm.
In stoppage time, Blair capitalized on a defensive error to break through and calmly finish past Chadwick, securing Eastleigh’s first victory in five matches. The win improved Eastleigh’s standing and injected confidence into a team that had struggled since the start of the campaign.
Boston United’s difficulties continued as their winless run extended to five games, with only one victory since August. Manager Paul Hurst acknowledged the need for defensive improvement ahead of their upcoming fixture against bottom-placed Gateshead on Tuesday. “It doesn’t feel like we’re a million miles away. We have to stop the goals going in,” he said.
Attendance for the match was recorded at 1,918. The scoring summary was Blair (22, 29, 90+3) and Rankine (60) for Eastleigh; John-Lewis (27, penalty) and Rooney (31) for Boston United.
