Ebbsfleet United faces the possibility of expulsion from the National League after failing to resolve financial irregularities that have resulted in their suspension from league play. The club was initially suspended for the first four matches of the National League South season due to an outstanding tax bill.

The National League's Compliance and Licensing Committee met on Wednesday morning and decided to maintain the suspension, citing ongoing concerns about Ebbsfleet’s financial stability and ability to complete the season. The club has been given a deadline of 5 p.m. on Tuesday to provide further documentation proving their financial capacity. Failure to meet this deadline could lead to the club being expelled from the league.

Ebbsfleet United, however, asserts that the debt in question has been settled following a recent change in ownership. Irish businessman John O’Leary completed a takeover of the club last week, after which the club claims full payment was made to HM Revenue & Customs to address the winding-up petition. According to a club statement, proof of this payment has been provided to the National League.

The statement explained that the required funds were transferred upon completion of the ownership change but arrived at the club late in the afternoon, after the league’s 10 a.m. committee meeting and the payment deadline had passed. The club acknowledged the uncertainty this situation has caused among supporters, staff, and players, expressing appreciation for their patience during the ongoing process.

The National League will review the evidence provided by Ebbsfleet United before making a final determination on the club’s league status. Until then, the club remains suspended from competition, missing the opportunity to play its scheduled fixtures.
