A recent study suggests that frequent respiratory infections in early childhood may increase the likelihood of developing eczema, a common inflammatory skin condition. Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, is characterized by itchy, red, dry, and cracked skin, and affects roughly 20 percent of children and 10 percent of adults in the United Kingdom. The condition typically begins in infancy or early childhood, although symptoms often improve with age.

Researchers analyzed data from two birth cohorts—one in Denmark and another in the United States—to investigate a potential link between infections and eczema development. The Danish group followed 663 children from birth until age three, recording daily occurrences of various infections, including colds, ear infections, tonsillitis, pneumonia, gastroenteritis, and fever. The study found that children experiencing more respiratory infections had a higher risk of being diagnosed with eczema. Specifically, those who suffered the most infections were 60 percent more likely to develop the condition than children with fewer infections.

This association was confirmed in a separate cohort of 707 American children. The link persisted even after accounting for antibiotic use and variations in the filaggrin gene, a known genetic risk factor for eczema that affects the skin’s barrier function. Researchers suggested that early respiratory infections might influence the developing immune system in a way that increases vulnerability to eczema later in childhood.

The study, published in JAMA Dermatology, highlights a potential long-term relationship between early-life respiratory infections and eczema, an influence that had remained unclear due to inconsistent results in previous research. However, the authors cautioned that, as an observational study, it could not establish a direct causal relationship. They noted that many eczema diagnoses occurred concurrently with recorded infections, making it difficult to determine whether infections preceded the onset of eczema or vice versa.

While the findings raise important questions about the role infections may play in the development of eczema, further research is needed to clarify the mechanisms involved and to explore potential prevention strategies targeting early childhood infections.
