Ed Sheeran addressed the controversy surrounding his Loop tour during a concert at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia on Saturday night, marking his first public remarks since opening act Macklemore was removed from the tour over remarks supporting the Palestinian cause. The incident sparked further fallout, with several other supporting acts withdrawing in solidarity and protests emerging outside Sheeran’s shows.
Sheeran, 35, opened the concert alone following the departure of his opening acts, apologizing to fans and acknowledging mistakes in how the situation was handled. He described the events as difficult decisions he had to make and expressed regret for disappointing his audience. “I don’t want to disappoint fans, and I’ve never wanted to be an activist musician, but this has put me in the middle of an important and passionate argument about freedom of speech and the most complex political issue on the planet,” Sheeran said.
In his remarks, Sheeran condemned the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel as "horrific" and called the ongoing conflict in Gaza "catastrophic and unjustifiable," highlighting the scale of civilian casualties, including children. He also referenced the systemic injustices unfolding in the West Bank, stating these could not be overlooked. Despite the strong language, Sheeran emphasized his desire for his music and performances to remain about unity and humanity rather than politics. “What is happening in Gaza is catastrophic and unjustifiable and disproportionate,” he said, his voice breaking at times.
The controversy began earlier in September when Macklemore openly declared "Free Palestine" during a show in New Jersey. Following the remarks, Sheeran’s promoter reportedly removed the rapper from the tour at the request of Robert Kraft, owner of the Gillette Stadium where future concerts were scheduled. Macklemore confirmed he was dropped after Kraft expressed opposition to his participation and pledged $1 million from his earnings on the tour to Palestinian aid organizations, challenging Kraft to match the donation. Both Kraft and Sheeran later committed $2 million each toward humanitarian relief efforts for Palestinians.
Following Macklemore’s removal, Irish act Aaron Rowe, Danish group Lukas Graham, and Finneas, among others, withdrew from the tour in protest. Ticket resales for the shows also declined, leading promoters to reduce prices. Outside the Philadelphia venue, protesters rallied peacefully in support of Palestinians, while some fans expressed mixed feelings about attending the concert amid the controversy. An 18-year-old student who chose to join the protests accused Sheeran of complicity in silencing Palestinian voices by acquiescing to stadium ownership pressures.
Critics have been divided over Sheeran’s response. Supporters praised his attempt to walk a careful line between addressing the humanitarian crisis and maintaining his apolitical stance in music. Others accused him of failing to stand up firmly for free speech and Palestinian rights, interpreting his apology and remarks as a capitulation to external pressures. One critic described the pro-Palestinian movement involved as exerting bullying tactics, while another highlighted the human toll of the conflict as justification for Israel’s military response.
Sheeran acknowledged that the experience had deeply affected him, causing him to question the future of his career and whether he wished to continue as a performer. Nonetheless, he affirmed his commitment to honoring his fans and continuing the tour without his usual supporting cast. The next scheduled concert is set for September 25 at Gillette Stadium in Massachusetts.
The incident has stirred broader conversations in the entertainment industry, where the war in Gaza and issues surrounding Palestinian rights have increasingly influenced public discourse and events. The Gaza health ministry, under Hamas control, reports more than 73,800 deaths resulting from the hostilities since late 2023.
