Edinburgh Airport experienced significant passenger delays on Friday evening following a security alert that led to a partial evacuation of the terminal. Police were notified around 6:50 p.m. after reports of suspicious items were found in the terminal building. In response, the airport implemented road closures near the site and disrupted flight operations as precautionary measures were taken.
An explosive ordnance disposal team was deployed to assess and secure the items, which were eventually declared safe. Authorities later confirmed that the incident was not being treated as suspicious. The airport remained closed overnight and resumed operations shortly after 3 a.m. on Saturday.
Despite the reopening, passengers arriving during the morning hours faced extended wait times, with queues stretching outside the terminal as staff managed the backlog caused by the disruption. Holidaymaker Christina Hendry described the experience, saying she had been waiting nearly an hour to pass through security.
Edinburgh Airport issued a statement acknowledging the delays and expressing appreciation for passengers’ patience, emphasizing that safety remains the top priority. The incident highlights the challenges airports face in balancing security protocols with passenger convenience during unexpected events.
