U.S. Education Secretary Linda McMahon has issued a stern warning to Harvard University regarding its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, signaling potential federal action if the programs continue in a manner deemed inconsistent with federal law.

In a recent episode of the podcast “Pod Force One,” McMahon indicated that the Department of Education is prepared to intensify investigations and enforcement measures targeting Harvard’s DEI programs. She emphasized the possibility of withholding federal research funding and pursuing legal actions through the Department of Justice (DOJ) as tools to ensure compliance.

This development follows a series of actions initiated shortly after President Donald Trump took office in 2025. Among them were executive directives aimed at dismantling DEI programs at Harvard and other universities. Additionally, the Department of Education opened inquiries into allegations of antisemitism on Harvard’s campus and examined the institution’s race-based admissions policies. Parallel to these probes, the DOJ filed a lawsuit against Harvard accusing the university of withholding vital admissions data.

Secretary McMahon's comments suggest that the department is prepared to escalate its scrutiny. “Having always the hammer of investigation, of losing federal funding for research and programs, as well as having lawsuits potentially brought by the Department of Justice are certainly things that they bear in mind as well,” she said during the interview.

Harvard has not publicly responded to McMahon’s latest statement. The university has previously maintained that its admissions policies and DEI programs comply with legal standards and that it is committed to fostering an inclusive educational environment.

The federal government's position reflects an ongoing debate over DEI initiatives in higher education, with supporters arguing these programs promote fairness and address historical inequalities, while opponents contend they may violate principles of meritocracy and federal statutes.

The Education Department's increased focus on DEI policies at Harvard and other institutions signals a continued shift in federal oversight of university admissions and campus programs, with potential implications for how universities implement diversity initiatives moving forward.
