Edward Leroy Despeaux, a longtime resident of Thurmont, Maryland, passed away peacefully at his home on August 2, 2026, at the age of 90. Born on September 24, 1935, Despeaux dedicated his life to his family and career, embodying a strong work ethic and modest character throughout his years.
Despeaux married his wife, Joan, on January 1, 1955, marking a marriage that lasted 71 years. He is survived by Joan; their five children, Cyreasa Sprankle, Craig Despeaux, Anne Reaver, Bryant Despeaux, and Renee Mathews; a son-in-law, Bill Grooms; his sister Christina Hurley; 10 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his daughter JoAnn Grooms, son-in-law Robert Mathews, parents Virginia and John Howard Leroy Despeaux, and sister Jeanne Breeden.
A 1953 graduate of Frederick High School, Despeaux began his career in the newspaper industry as a young paperboy for the Washington Times-Herald. During high school, he gained experience working under Thomas Staley, a Washington Post distributor, which laid the foundation for his lifelong involvement in the newspaper business. In 1964, he became a Washington Post distributor serving customers in Frederick and Washington Counties in Maryland as well as Jefferson County in West Virginia. His dedication earned him the distinction of Suburban and Country Distributor of the Year in the late 1990s.
In addition to his newspaper work, Despeaux served as a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service for 35 years, delivering mail during the day and newspapers at night. His 13 years of military service in the Maryland Army National Guard included time on the Governor’s Pistol Team as a marksman, reflecting his commitment to both community and country.
Despeaux faced serious health challenges, including colon and bladder cancers, which he overcame with resilience. An avid reader and history enthusiast with a particular interest in the Civil War, he maintained a habit of reading multiple newspapers daily. Beyond his professional and personal interests, he enjoyed flying, completing his first solo flight in October 1971, and was a devoted sports fan, supporting the New York Yankees, Washington Commanders, and following tennis and golf.
A longtime member of the Frederick Church of the Brethren, Despeaux quietly expressed his faith through acts of kindness and service. His family and friends will honor his memory with a funeral service scheduled for August 7, 2026, at the Frederick Church of the Brethren, followed by interment at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Frederick. Attendees are invited to a reception afterward at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to support Maverick, a great-grandson battling a rare genetic disease.
