Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) has resumed operations at half of the reduction cells in its Al Taweelah smelter in Abu Dhabi, signaling significant progress toward restoring full production following a shutdown earlier this year. As of now, 631 out of 1,262 reduction cells are active, with ongoing work across all three production lines.
The smelter had been forced to halt operations on March 28 after an Iranian attack targeted the Khalifa Economic Zone in Abu Dhabi, leading to the evacuation of the entire site. This emergency shutdown resulted in molten aluminium solidifying within the production cells, requiring careful removal before production could resume.
EGA, recognized as the largest industrial company in the United Arab Emirates outside the oil and gas sector, first restarted a single cell on May 26 and has been steadily bringing additional cells back online since then. The company anticipates that the facility will return to full operational capacity during the first quarter of 2027.
The phased restart underscores EGA’s efforts to recover from the disruption caused by the security incident and reflects broader industrial resilience in the region.
