Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) is conducting trials of an upgraded smelting technology at its Al Taweelah facility in the United Arab Emirates, aiming to boost production capacity while reducing energy consumption and emissions. The pilot involves installing the new E40 technology on 13 DX reduction cells at the smelter’s two operating potlines.

If successful, the technology could be extended to all 808 DX cells across potlines 1 and 2. EGA projects that a full-scale deployment would increase annual hot metal output from these potlines by approximately 67,000 tonnes. In addition, the company anticipates a reduction in net specific energy consumption and related carbon dioxide emissions by around 6 percent per tonne of aluminium produced.

The implementation of the E40 technology coincides with ongoing efforts to restore operations at Al Taweelah following significant damage and an emergency shutdown earlier this year. EGA has expedited the pilot project to ensure the upgrades can be incorporated as part of the facility’s phased reopening.

This initiative reflects more than 30 years of smelting technology innovation by EGA, which has consistently utilized proprietary technologies in all expansions of its UAE smelting operations since the 1990s. The current trial at Al Taweelah represents the latest step in the company’s strategy to enhance efficiency and environmental performance in aluminium production.
