Eight people sought medical attention after a woman discharged bear spray during a dispute at a hotel in lower Manhattan on Monday morning, according to police. The incident occurred around 8 a.m. inside the DoubleTree by Hilton New York Downtown on Stone Street near Broadway in the Financial District.

Authorities reported that the woman released a potent bear spray and subsequently fled the scene. She had not been apprehended as of the latest update.

Among those affected, a 39-year-old man and a 39-year-old woman were transported to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Additionally, six other individuals—three men and three women—were treated on site for symptoms including eye irritation and itching.

Following the incident, hotel staff directed guests to evacuate the building as a safety precaution. Witnesses described the event as chaotic. Sandy Shannon, 62, who was staying at the hotel, recounted that the spray was released on the fourth floor and that two housekeepers assisted the affected individual. “She was screaming in the hallway,” Shannon said. “The next thing I know we were being evacuated.”

Police continue to investigate the circumstances leading to the release of the spray and are searching for the woman involved. The incident has caused temporary disruption at the hotel but no serious injuries have been reported.
