Eight people were taken to hospital following a collision between a bus and a lorry in Newcastle city centre on Tuesday morning. The crash occurred on Westgate Road shortly before 10:15 a.m., involving a double-decker Stagecoach bus and a delivery vehicle.

Emergency services responded promptly to the scene, with police, fire, and ambulance crews all in attendance. The North East Ambulance Service dispatched four ambulance crews, a specialist paramedic, and a clinical team leader to provide medical assistance. Eight individuals were transported to the Royal Victoria Infirmary for further treatment, while others received care at the scene and were discharged. The condition of those hospitalized has not been disclosed.

Northumbria Police reported receiving notification of the collision shortly after 10:15 a.m. and confirmed the involvement of the two vehicles. Officers have been working alongside emergency responders to manage the situation and support ongoing investigations.

Firefighters from Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service were called at 10:17 a.m. and deployed three appliances from Byker and Hebburn stations. Their crews secured both vehicles and confirmed no one was trapped inside. Fire teams left the scene by 10:40 a.m. after ensuring safety measures were in place.

The collision led to the closure of Westgate Road for nearly three hours, with traffic diversions implemented until the road reopened around 1:00 p.m.

Stagecoach, which operates the bus service involved, expressed concern for those impacted and emphasized cooperation with emergency services and the police. The company stated that its primary focus remains the welfare of passengers, the driver, and others affected by the incident. Further comments were withheld as inquiries continue.
