At the Jerusalem Post Diplomatic Conference, Stanley Morais, director of Partnerships and International Affairs for EL AL Israel Airlines, emphasized the critical role of flight connectivity as a strategic component of Israel’s national infrastructure. Speaking on the airline’s response following the events of October 7, Morais described the operational challenges faced by EL AL not merely as commercial issues but as matters of national responsibility.

Morais highlighted the airline’s efforts to support passengers during this period, facilitating urgent travel, transporting essential cargo, and maintaining vital international links. He noted that recent years have underscored the importance of air connectivity in bolstering diplomacy, trade, tourism, investment, and personal relationships for Israel. The narrowing of alternative routes, he said, has further increased the duties borne by the country’s primary carrier.

The changing geopolitical landscape, particularly the Abraham Accords, has had a significant impact on EL AL’s operations. Morais pointed out that these agreements have altered the regional travel map by enabling direct routes for tourism, commerce, and human exchange. He stated that airlines play a key role in transforming diplomatic possibilities into tangible connections, thereby strengthening bonds between people.

Morais outlined three main effects of geopolitical shifts on EL AL’s business: adjustments to the flight network and customer demand; changes in competition and partnership dynamics; and the evolving risk environment. He noted that external factors such as fluctuations in fuel prices, exchange rates, insurance costs, security demands, regulatory conditions, and supply chain disruptions all influence airline operations and are outside the company’s control.

To remain resilient amid these uncertainties, Morais stressed the importance of financial discipline, operational flexibility, and scenario-based planning. Reflecting on the recent period of instability, he acknowledged that while uncertainty cannot be fully eliminated, preparedness and adaptability are crucial for navigating challenges and capitalizing on new opportunities linked to advancing diplomacy.

Morais summarized the airline’s ongoing mission as maintaining readiness to provide service during crises, compete effectively as markets stabilize, and seize prospects created through diplomatic developments. His remarks underscored EL AL’s strategic role in supporting Israel’s global connectivity and the broader implications of air transport in national security and international relations.
